Industrial Water Treatment

Industrial water treatment systems from HSA Engineering: efficient, environmentally responsible and cost-effective solutions designed around your process.

Industrial water treatment is a critical process for factories, production plants and large facilities. Water is used in many different ways in industry, and the contaminants it carries must be removed with the right combination of treatment methods. Choosing the right system matters both for environmental sustainability and for keeping operating costs under control. Below we summarise the main processes, technologies, benefits and applications.

Why Industrial Water Treatment Matters

Treating process water improves process efficiency and reduces environmental impact. Untreated water causes scaling and corrosion in machinery and piping, lowers product quality and can harm the environment. In sectors such as food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, textiles, chemicals, energy and metal processing, water must be clean and consistent in quality.

The Industrial Water Treatment Process

Pretreatment

  • Sand / multimedia filtration
  • Activated carbon filtration
  • pH adjustment
  • Chemical dosing

Main Treatment

  • Reverse osmosis (RO)
  • Ultrafiltration (UF)
  • Nanofiltration (NF)
  • Electrodeionization (EDI)

Post-Treatment and Disinfection

  • UV disinfection
  • Ozonation
  • Chlorination

Industrial Water Treatment Methods

1. Reverse Osmosis (RO)

Water is pressed through semi-permeable membranes that reject the large majority of dissolved salts, organics and microorganisms. RO is the core technology for process water, boiler feed water and drinking water production.

2. Ultrafiltration (UF)

UF membranes remove suspended solids, colloids, bacteria and turbidity, but not dissolved salts. It is widely used as RO pretreatment and for water reuse.

3. Nanofiltration (NF)

NF sits between UF and RO: it removes hardness, colour and part of the dissolved salts at lower pressure than RO.

4. Electrodeionization (EDI)

EDI polishes RO permeate to high-purity water without chemical regeneration, for applications such as high-pressure boilers, pharmaceuticals and electronics.

5. Chemical Treatment

Coagulation, flocculation, neutralisation, antiscalant and corrosion-inhibitor dosing keep water within process limits and protect equipment.

6. Biological Treatment

Used mainly for wastewater with organic load, where microorganisms break down dissolved organic matter before discharge or reuse.

Benefits of Industrial Water Treatment

  • Stable product quality and process reliability
  • Less scaling, corrosion and unplanned downtime
  • Lower water, energy and chemical costs
  • Compliance with environmental and discharge regulations
  • Water reuse and reduced fresh water consumption

Applications

Food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, textiles, chemicals, energy (boiler feed and cooling water), automotive, metal processing, hotels, hospitals and agriculture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which industries use industrial water treatment systems?
Food and beverage, textiles, chemicals, energy, automotive, pharmaceuticals and metal processing, among others. Each sector selects treatment methods suited to its own processes.

How long does it take for a system to pay back?
It depends on capacity, technology and the facility's water consumption and costs. We prepare a project-specific cost and savings assessment during the design stage.

What is the difference between reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration?
RO removes dissolved salts and most other contaminants under high pressure. UF removes larger particles and microorganisms but does not remove dissolved minerals.

Do industrial water treatment systems need regular maintenance?
Yes. Filter replacement, membrane cleaning, chemical dosing checks and instrument calibration keep the system efficient and extend its life. HSA Engineering offers periodic maintenance contracts.
