Water Softening and Scale Prevention Systems

Water softening systems remove calcium and magnesium hardness to prevent scale in boilers, heaters, pipes and equipment.

Hard water contains high levels of calcium and magnesium. When it is heated or evaporates, these minerals form scale on heat exchangers, boilers, water heaters, pipes and appliances, reducing efficiency, increasing energy consumption and causing breakdowns.

How Does a Water Softener Work?

A softener uses ion-exchange resin that exchanges calcium and magnesium ions for sodium ions. When the resin is saturated, it is automatically regenerated with brine, and the cycle starts again.

System Types
  • Single (simplex) softeners: for intermittent or smaller demand
  • Duplex (twin-tank) softeners: one tank in service while the other regenerates, for continuous soft water
  • Triplex and larger systems: for high flow rates in industry and hotels
  • Volume- or time-controlled valves: to minimise salt and water use
Applications

Steam boilers, hot water systems, cooling circuits, laundries, hotels, hospitals, food production, car washes and RO pretreatment.

Other Scale Prevention Methods

Where softening is not suitable, antiscalant dosing or polyphosphate dosing can be used to control scale.

Why HSA Engineering?

We size softeners from water hardness and daily consumption, install them and provide resin, valve and salt supply and maintenance. Contact us for a site survey and quote.
