Rainwater Harvesting and Treatment Systems

Rainwater harvesting systems collect, filter and treat rainwater from roofs and paved areas for irrigation, toilet flushing, cleaning and process use.

Rainwater collected from roofs and hard surfaces is a free and renewable water source. With proper collection, filtration and disinfection it can replace mains water in many non-potable uses, reducing water bills and the load on stormwater networks.

System Components
  • Collection: gutters, downpipes and leaf/debris filters
  • First-flush diverter: discards the most polluted first runoff
  • Storage tank: above-ground or underground, sized to rainfall and demand
  • Filtration: sediment, multimedia and, if required, activated carbon filters
  • Disinfection: UV and/or chlorination
  • Pumping and control: automatic switch-over to mains water when the tank is empty
Uses

Landscape irrigation, toilet flushing, vehicle and floor washing, cooling tower make-up and, with further treatment, process water.

Design

Tank volume and treatment level are calculated from roof area, local rainfall, demand profile and intended use.
