Wastewater Treatment Systems
Wastewater treatment systems clean domestic and industrial wastewater so that it can be safely discharged or reused.
Wastewater treatment systems remove pollutants from used water through a series of physical, biological and chemical processes, so that the water can be safely discharged or reused. They are used to treat wastewater of industrial, domestic and agricultural origin.
How Does Wastewater Treatment Work?
A treatment plant removes organic and inorganic matter, microorganisms and other contaminants from the water. The process is usually built up in four main stages.
1. Physical (Primary) Treatment
Screens, grit and grease removal units, equalisation tanks and settling remove solids, sand, oil and grease from the incoming wastewater.
2. Biological Treatment
Microorganisms break down dissolved organic matter. Depending on the load and the space available, activated sludge, MBBR or MBR processes are used.
3. Chemical Treatment
Coagulation, flocculation, neutralisation and precipitation remove compounds that biological treatment cannot, such as heavy metals, colour and certain toxic substances.
4. Disinfection
Before discharge or reuse, the treated water is disinfected, typically with UV or chlorine, to inactivate remaining pathogens.
Why Is Wastewater Treatment Important?
Untreated wastewater pollutes seas, rivers and groundwater. Treating it before discharge protects natural resources and keeps facilities compliant with environmental regulations and discharge permits. Properly treated water can also be reused for irrigation, cooling, cleaning or process applications, reducing fresh water consumption.
Types of Wastewater Treatment Systems
Systems range from compact units for small sites to packaged plants and large industrial facilities, designed according to flow rate and wastewater characteristics.
Domestic Wastewater Treatment
Used for residential complexes, hotels, holiday villages, worksites and other settlements without a sewer connection. A typical packaged plant includes screening, a biological treatment stage, clarification, a treated water tank and disinfection.
Industrial Wastewater Treatment
Used in production facilities, where the design depends strongly on the process and the pollutants it generates. Industrial plants combine chemical treatment, physical separation and, where suitable, biological treatment, and may include recovery stages so that water can be returned to the process.
Turnkey Wastewater Treatment by HSA Engineering
HSA Engineering designs, manufactures, installs and commissions wastewater treatment plants on a turnkey basis. Each project starts with a site survey and wastewater analysis, and continues with operator training, periodic maintenance and spare parts support after commissioning.
